The defendant confessed to 17 criminal counts at Leicester Crown Court on Friday

A person who spiked treats with sedative and distributed them to youngsters at a summer program in the region has admitted sexual offences against two young males who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight minors and a grown-up fell ill at the location in the summer month.

The elderly man, from that region, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

However, he denied one particular crime he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on late November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, detailed the defendant's actions to the court.

She explained his victims were under-privileged children who were participating in a youth camp which he managed.

Ruben conducted a "candy game" with the minors, the legal counsel said, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to consume candy "rapidly".

She informed the proceedings the man had engaged in this activity with the boys "over an extended period", and children had previously become sick the next day.

She said the man had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in summer 2025.

The legal representative stated further: "This year his stepson had concerns about the activities, justifiably.

"They decided to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC stated objects including baby oil, Vaseline and injection devices were discovered, and his family member contacted the law enforcement about his worries.

She said Ruben continued to conduct the "treat game" with six boys that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"The police had not gone out by that time," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

Mrs Prior said the youngsters were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the police again.

She stated the man then conducted the "treat game" in a space of five youngsters.
